Unveiled at the start of last month, Batman: Arkham Shadow is the latest chapter in the beloved Arkham series of Batman games that began with the Rocksteady Studios developed Batman: Arkham Asylum. Over its close to 15 years of existence, the Arkham series has been expanded upon by other creators – both in and out of the video game space – and the latest chapter hails from Marvel’s Iron Man VR developer Camouflaj as an exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 VR device.

As promised during its reveal, Batman: Arkham Shadow‘s debut story trailer just dropped during the 2-hour Summer Game Fest presentation. Though we’ll have to wait until Gamescom to see the what Arkham Shadow will play like, there’s some things to chew on in the meantime in the latest cinematic.

Set to a superb take on The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”, we know now during voice over from the Dark Knight himself that we’re in the pre-Asylum era of the series. This is because Roger Craig Smith, who voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne in 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins, is back as the title character. This time Batman is fighting against a city overwhelmed be fear courtesy of the main villain, The Rat King. Supporting players, like Jim Gordon, Harley Quinn and Jonathan Crane also make appearances, however the later 2 have not yet gone fully to the dark side.
