Though vaccine rollout has begun worldwide, many unfortunately still haven’t got a shot or are only on their first. Thus, this year’s E3 will be a digital only event that’s just around the corner. Announced today, Square-Enix will be holding a presentation on Sunday, June 13th at 12:15 PT. During that event, the public will get a fresh look at the upcoming War for Wakanda expansion for Marvel’s Avengers that was unveiled back in March.
Square-Enix will also show off more than just Marvel’s Avengers, including a new game from Eidos Montreal that, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, should be of particular interest to Marvel fans.
Schreier, during his tenure at Kotaku, wrote all the back in 2017 that Eidos Montreal was reportedly working on a Guardians of the Galaxy title, and since that time, there has been little more than rumors and whispers about the project. Eidos Montreal over the years has shipped Shadow of the Tomb Raider and has been a support studio for Marvel’s Avengers.
It will be interesting to see what form a potential Guardians of the Galaxy game will take. Since its launch last year, Marvel’s Avengers has been playing a depressing game of catch up as its developers have struggled to keep up with a dwindling player base that’s hungry for content. Will Guardians of the Galaxy chase after the Games as a Service model, be a more traditional title with co-operative elements or something else entirely?
We’ll know in but a short week-and-a-half. The last time the Guardians of the Galaxy received their own game, it was via an episodic adventure series from Telltale. Over the years, however, the team has shown up in ensemble titles like LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order among others.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PlayStation 4 and 5, the Xbox family of consoles, PC and Google Stadia.
