GAMESCOM 2019: SONY ACQUIRES MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN DEVELOPER INSOMNIAC GAMES

It’s official: Sony has finally put a ring on it and acquired Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games.

Developer Insomniac Games has been synonymous with Sony since the original PlayStation era where they hit it big with the Spyro the Dragon trilogy, and it’s been surprising that it’s been this long that Sony hasn’t bought them up until now. Though Insomniac has went multiplatform in the past few years making titles like the EA published shooter Fuse and the cult favorite Sunset Overdrive published by Microsoft, they’ve still kept a solid relationship with Sony, keeping the Ratchet and Clank series alive on top of making the best-selling superhero game of all time with last year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. It comes with little surprise that Sony has brought Insomniac Games into the fold with the fifth PlayStation coming next year. A sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has now sold 13.2 million copies, will be a reason for many to keep playing in the PlayStation ecosystem instead of switching to competitors like Microsoft, Nintendo, and now Google who is entering the video game market with their Stadia streaming platform.
