It was rumored all the way back in early 2022 that the Rocksteady Studios developed Batman games could be coming to Nintendo Switch. This news started spreading when French retailer WTT posted a listing for the port with a place holder date of August 31st, 2022. Many a Nintendo Direct came and went since then, but neither the Dark Knight’s pointy horns nor Joker’s iconic grin showed themselves.
That is, however, until today.
Debuting today during a Direct that aired at 10AM EDT, Batman: Arkham Trilogy was shown for the first time via a trailer during the presentation. Clocking in at just under a minute-and-a-half, the footage promised all three games in one package – Batman: Arkham Origins and it’s spin-off Blackgate are once again left out in the cold – with all of the DLC for each game included. The developer tasked with the conversion was named at the very end, Turn Me Up Games, the studio responsible for bringing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, Borderlands: Legendary Collection and It Takes Two to Nintendo’s latest console.
Absent from the reveal, however, was how Batman: Arkham Trilogy was going to be delivered on the Nintendo Switch. Batman: Arkham Knight was built from the ground up for the last generation of consoles, and the Batman: Return to Arkham collection had Asylum and City on their own disc after all. By digging into the FAQ on the game’s official page, it was unearthed that, thankfully, you don’t have to download a client to stream any game in Batman: Arkham Trilogy like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or Capcom’s latest Resident Evil offerings. From a physical media preservation stand point though, Batman: Arkham Asylum is the only game on the cart should you go that route, with Batman: Arkham City and Knight needing to be downloaded. Each require the cart to be inserted into the system to be played regardless.
The last time an Arkham game was on a Nintendo platform, it was Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate – Deluxe Edition which arrived in 2014 for the Wii U. This was the download only console upgrade to the Nintendo 3DS/PlayStation Vita spin-off of Batman: Arkham Origins. While the Switch has some great comic book games, like the under appreciated DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos and LEGO DC Super-Villains, the only solo Batman title that has landed on it up until this point is the Telltale games so more are definitely appreciated. The “wow” factor of seeing the Arkham games on Switch is diminished a little in a post-Steam Deck world, but for the Nintendo faithful or those who don’t have the budget for Valve’s portable PC, Batman: Arkham Trilogy is still an important release.
Besides, who doesn’t want an excuse to replay these iconic games again?
Batman: Arkham Trilogy arrives fall 2023, exclusively to Nintendo Switch.
