Last October, EA announced they had entered into a multigame deal with Marvel Games to developed 3 action-adventure titles set within the Marvel Universe. The first of those to be announced was Iron Man from EA Motive, who built the Dead Space remake that dropped earlier this year, and now we know the second.
Earlier today, EA unveiled that a new studio, christened as Cliffhanger Games, is crafting a new single-player title starring none other than Black Panther. Located in Seattle, the studio is head up by Kevin Stephens, formerly of the studio behind the Middle-Earth titles, Monolith Productions. Senior Narrative duties are in the hands of Alexa Ray Corriea who worked on big franchises like Call of Duty and smaller games like Bugsnax. Speaking on the reveal of EA’s Black Panther project, Kevin had this to say:
“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”
The development team at Cliffhanger Games will be working in partnership with Marvel Games “to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves.”
But a few years ago, Black Panther would sadly be lucky to score a guest spot in a video game. Now the character, not to mention his home nation of Wakanda, are not only getting their rightfully deserved big-budget title, they’re headlining major expansions in things like Marvel’s Avengers and finally entering the ring in Marvel vs. Capcom crossover fighting series. EA’s Black Panther outing is also but one presently in development, as they’ll star alongside Captain America in an untitled project from Skydance New Media set in World War II.
The sobering reminder of today’s news is that as exciting as it is that we’re someday going to be playing a solo Black Panther game, it’s more than likely a few years away from even getting a gameplay trailer. This is not something unique to this project though, as high profile licensed games starring Wonder Woman, Indiana Jones, and James Bond were shown off in a similar way only to go dark.
