THE GAME AWARDS: MARVEL’S BLADE COMING FROM THE FOLKS BEHIND DISHONORED AND DEATHLOOP

The annual Game Trailers & Commercials Awards aired this Thursday and, as always, the show sped through most of the actual awards to get to make room for celebrity cameos, commercials, whoever Hideo Kojima roped into working with him this year and world premieres.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had a brief trailer during the broadcast which didn’t reveal much of anything new, but there was a big show stopping moments for lovers of digital superhero adventures. Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Lyon, the studio behind both Dishonored and Deathloop, unveiled that they are partnering with Marvel Games to create the first Blade console title since 2002’s Blade II on the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox.

Like past Game Awards teasers like Wonder Woman which the public has yet to truly see anything of, what will most likely end up being called Marvel’s Blade is assuredly years away. The brief proof of concept trailer hinted at the setting – it looks like Blade will be hunting vampires in Paris – and an art style that appears to be more stylized than the shooting for realism Sony published Marvel adventures.

VP and Creative Director at Marvel Games Bill Rosemann was at the show with Arkane’s Dinga Bakaba to show their genuine, infectious excitement for the project. After the awards, Bakaba took to social media to provide further details on Blade, mainly that it’s a 3rd-person, single-player action game that will include the elements that fans of Arkane’s previous work will enjoy.

What still remains elusive is whether or not Blade will be an exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. Microsoft purchased Bethesda and their internal studios, including Arkane, in 2020 and have kept titles like Starfield and Arkane’s own Redfall to themselves. Sony has ported 2 out of the 3 Marvel titles they’ve published to PC but have kept them out of the hands of the Xbox faithful. If they so choose, Microsoft could very well do the same with Blade.
