Ever since the reveal, launch, and eventual success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge from developer Tribute Games and publisher Dotemu, the question was when either Marvel or DC would apply their universe to this concept.
Well, if you’re going to do it, you might as well go the best, right?
Marvel Cosmic Invasion was unveiled to the the world today during Nintendo’s pre-Switch 2 Direct. From the exact same studio that created Shredder’s Revenge, Marvel Cosmic Invasion uses the 2006 Annihilation event as its backdrop. The big bad of the story was Annihilus who launches the Annihilation Wave from the Negative Zone that threatened to destroy all of existence. Its follow-up, Annihilation: Conquest, saw a reformation of Marvel’s cosmic line, including a new status quo for Richard Rider, aka Nova, and the Guardians of the Galaxy who resembled the team that James Gunn would take inspiration from when he brought them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Annihilius looms in the promotional art for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, but the trailer that premiered during the Direct featured promised Earth centric battle zones and heroes like Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Storm, Venom plus the cosmic duo of Nova and Phyla-Vell.
Marvel Cosmic Invasion looks like it’s taking everything that made Shredder’s Revenge a masterpiece: amazing 2-D sprite art and a great soundtrack, mixing it with classic Marvel character designs and new play mechanics. The Steam page for the game mentions an ability called the Cosmic Swap where you can briefly call in assists which can be witnessed in the trailer.
Marvel Cosmic Invasion is tentatively targeting a 2025 release for all major platforms.
