NEWS ROUND UP: EA’S BLACK PANTHER JOINS THE ANCESTORS AND AN MVC GAMERVERSE MARVEL LEGENDS LINE IS ON THE WAY

The news broke yesterday that another high profile comic book game that didn’t even get the opportunity to show even a screenshot to the public has gotten the axe. The victim this time is EA’s Black Panther title that was announced almost 2 years ago in the summer of 2023. The studio, Cliffhanger Games, that was effectively formed to work on this project is also no more with the usual corporate speak that accompanies such things from EA’s Laura Miele stating:

“These decisions are hard,…They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

Cliffhanger’s Games’ studio head was Kevin Stephens, who was formerly an executive at Monolith Productions. Similar to the fate of Cliffhanger, Monolith also shuttered earlier this year and took an in-development Wonder Woman game with it.

On a less depressing note, a Hasbro Pulse stream that took place earlier today revealed a new line of Marvel vs. Capcom in all but name only 2-packs as part of the Marvel Legends Gamerverse brand. Shuma-Gorath – names Gargantos on the packaging – and Juggernaut will be larger sized figures that will come without a partner. They’re joined by Captain America vs. Venom, Wolverine vs. Silver Samurai, Psylocke vs. Thanos and Omega Red vs. War Machine. Sadly, Hasbro isn’t shelling out for the Capcom license like Toy Biz did back in the day but it’s a step in the right direction. Titles like Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy either had little or no love from Hasbro who instead choose to keep pumping out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 variants instead.

In Canada, the average Marvel Legends collectible runs about $40 after taxes, so expect these to push $100. Follow the preternia social media account for updates, and prices of course will vary by retailer, country, and whatever craziness happens that week.
