NEWS ROUND UP: MARVEL AND INDIE COMICS RULE SUMMER GAME FEST 2025

Now that E3 is dead and gone, Summer Game Fest weekend has become the big mid-year event where developers and publishers both big and small show up with hot new trailers for their upcoming projects. Among the biggest reveals this past weekend were games based on comic book properties.

Tribute Games, the beloved developers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, showed up with 2 titles: an update on an already announced game, and a sequel that came as a huge surprise to everyone. Unveiled in March, Marvel Cosmic Invasion showed off 2 new characters: Rocket Raccoon and She-Hulk.

Later in the Friday kick-offf presentation, Tribute’s logo showed up once more with Scott Pilgrim EX, a sequel with a much shorter name than Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers – along with 5 of their friends – must team-up to take down 3 rival gangs who have taken over Toronto in a battle across space and time. Scott Pilgrim EX‘s debut promises input from series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and the beyond welcoming musical stylings of Anamanaguchi. It will arrive after Marvel Cosmic Invasion in 2026.

Not content with having Marvel Cosmic Invasion and the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls in their release calendar, Marvel Games dropped the premiere for Marvel’s Deadpool VR from developer Twisted Pixel Games and Oculus Studios. Most will know Twisted Pixel from their ‘Spolosion Man days, but they’ve been a part of Meta’s VR studio portfolio since 2021. In Deadpool’s first game, he was voiced by Nolan “Nathan Drake” North, but this time around he’s played by none other than Carl Jenkins himself, Neil Patrick Harris.

Shooting for a 2025 window, Marvel’s Deadpool VR is a combination of gun and sword play mixed with parkour style movement. Expect to come up against the Hand and Omega Red in this very much M-rated action game exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 and 3S devices.

On Sunday, Xbox put off their own showcase which included the announcement of Invincible VS, a 3v3 tag-fighter from developer Quarter Up, who are a part of Skybound Games. Including the likes of the title character, Atom Eve, Omni-Man, Rex Splode among others, Invincible VS looks to give Mortal Kombat a run for its money with the level of violence on display.

Heard in the trailer are many of the actors from the Invincible series that’s streaming on Amazon including J.K Simmons, Steven Yuen and Jillian Jacobs. Though not stated within the show itself, Maximilian Dood made it known that Quarter Up is made up of staff who worked on the Killer Instinct revival at Double Helix. While it had a rocky launch on the Xbox One, Killer Instinct (2013) rebounded quickly and developed a passionate following. Max himself speaks highly of it, so there’s cause to be very excited for Invincible VS when it launches.
