OPENING NIGHT LIVE: THE LEGO DARK KNIGHT RETURNS AND DEADPOOL VR GETS A RELEASE DATE

Gamescom 2025 is officially underway having kicked off with the over 2-hour Opening Night Live presentation yesterday. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the creator of The Game Awards, it was a mix of trailers for titles that were already announced and world premiers that get audiences to flock to twitch and other streaming platforms to be among the first to see them. One of the biggest, and perhaps best, surprises of the show was the announcement of a brand new DC Comics video game.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight from developer TT Games, tentatively set to arrive sometime in 2026, is effectively the LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga but applied to Batman and that’s not to be reductive in the least. TT Games has been away from the DC license for almost a decade now with their last foray after 3 Batman titles being the excellent, and somewhat underappreciated, LEGO DC Super-Villains in 2018. The Skywalker Saga was very well regarded by those who played it and an exciting new direction for TT Games long-running series of LEGO offerings. This new design style applied to Batman is exactly the boost that the DC Comics brands needs in the interactive space right now.

From the trailer, Legacy of the Dark Knight looks to touch upon many iterations of Batman including the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan films, even Matt Reeves’ The Batman. As seen in the debut footage and extended demos from the Gamescom show floor, this new LEGO Batman seems to borrow mechanics from the beloved Arkham saga, including how Batman glides about Gotham and bounces between enemies in combat. Expect to come up against villains like Bane, The Joker, The Penguin and Poison Ivy while getting aid from allies such as Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman and more in 2026.

As a bonus if you sign up for a WB Games account, players can unlock a “Golden Age” Batman suit.

Revealed to the world during Summer Games Fest, Marvel’s Deadpool VR, an exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 family of devices from developer Twisted Pixel, also made an appearance during Opening Night Live. The Merc with a Mouth’s latest appearance at a Geoff Keighley hosted event brought new story details and a release date.

The big bad of Marvel’s Deadpool VR is Mojo, voiced by none other than John Leguizamo, who has recruited Deadpool, as well as Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Mephisto, and Ultimo to boost the ratings of his deadly reality show. Players can strap on their headsets to shoot, slash, and parkour about the Mojoverse starting on November 18th, 2025.
