STATE OF PLAY: MARVEL’S WOLVERINE IS SHARPENING ITS CLAWS FOR ITS FALL 2026 RELEASE

Ever since the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase – the same one in which Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was revealed – there hasn’t been one Sony event where the lead up hasn’t been “so this is the one with Wolverine, right?”.

Sony just finished broadcasting a new State of Play presentation and yes, it was finally the one with Wolverine in it. Marvel’s Wolverine, which will mark Insomniac Games 4th collaboration with Marvel, looks like the true follow up to the beloved X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition from all the way back in 2009 which is not entirely a bad thing. Their Spider-Man games are better mouse traps built on the bones of titles like Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows which were both solid blueprints to expand upon.

The debut footage was rich with gameplay of the title character slicing-and-dicing foes in very M-rated ways both in and out of costume. Given how grounded a lot of Wolverine material content has been lately, save last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s great to see the character in something that resembles an outfit from the comics and not just jeans and plaid. Locations jumped between the city of Madripoor to snowy, presumably Canadian, wilderness. Villains such as Mystique, Omega Red and a giant Sentinel – which again harkens back to X-Men Origins: Wolverine – will play a role in the story which we’ll learn more about towards the games fall 2026 release.

Continuing the trend of Australians portraying the beloved Canadian, Liam McIntyre, who took over the role of Spartacus in the excellent Starz series and joined the Gears of War franchise in the 4th and 5th chapters, will be playing Wolverine.
