Given the mainstream success that Marvel has obtained as a brand from their cinematic universe, many (including myself) have been asking the question: When is the Avengers videogame coming? The answer, as given by heard of Marvel Games TQ Jefferson in an interview with IGN, is that the game “will come when we have the right partner,.” He added:

“The Avengers game will come when we have the right partner, that has the right vision, that has the time to develop a strong, competitive triple-A title and wants to do it right,…It has to hit our three pillars: Fun and engaging gameplay, true to the characters, compelling story. Without hitting those notes, we shouldn’t do it. Gamers, they know better. They’re not going to flock to something that’s sub-par.”

Jefferson also admitted guilt for the sub par tie-in games that were produced by Sega during the Phase One years of the cinematic universe, citing specifically the Thor and Captain America games released in 2011 (though I still stand firm that the PS3/Xbox 360 SKU of Captain America is a really good game, as is the Nintendo Wii and DS SKU’s of Thor: God of Thunder.) Jefferson thinks differently stating “…We got a bloody nose on both of those.”

His statement regarding Marvel’s new direction going forward is something that gamers can rally behind, as it seems Marvel’s game division is perusing quality over making a quick buck going forward as Jefferson cites why there was no Avengers game in time for the 2012 mega blockbuster:

“I think the fact that there wasn’t an Avengers game turned out in time for the film is indicative of Marvel’s new attitude and the approach to how we find partners and build games. I think in the heyday of the movie licensed game, these games were popping out all the time and most of them sucked.”

With no Avengers game in the pipeline any time soon, players can next look forward to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes appearing in this fall’s Disney Infinity 2.0, and in the meantime there’s always the stellar Lego Marvel Super Heroes, both Marvel Ultimate Alliance games and for those craving some classic beat-em-up action, Captain America and the Avengers.
