Approaching two years ago, before Sony decided to share the Spider-Man film rights with Marvel Studios, I wrote an editorial arguing that the best stewards for the Spider-Man video game franchise would be Sony themselves. Now it seems that amazing fantasy I had (see what I did there?) could, fingers crossed, be a reality. That is if Nerd Leaks is to be believed. Today the following was Tweeted from the Nerd Leaks Twitter account:
Take this with a grain of salt mind you, and maybe I’m just being optimistic because this would be a dream come true, but this is a rumour I hope turns out to be a reality. Spider-Man is set to blow up in Captain America: Civil War in just over two weeks and riding off of that buzz, will once again grace theatres with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming co-produced by Sony and Marvel Studios. Spider-Man has never not been popular, but no on can deny the excitement that the collective world got the second they saw him land and squint his eyes in the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer.
There’s also the matter of Sony’s VR head set. A game getting a lot of buzz for the Oculus Rift platform is a cel-shaded game called Windlands that plays very much like a Spider-Man game would in VR. Perhaps Sony is looking to marry the franchise they still have a stake in their film division with the VR platform they’re ready to push on us. If that’s the case, I’ll start saving up my money now, but truth be told I’d rather just have a first-party produced Spider-Man game that I could enjoy with a controller.
E3 suddenly can’t come fast enough.
Supporting the claim further that Sony has something Spider-Man planned for the PlayStation 4, Nerd Leaks found the resume of a performer named Stephen Oyoung who lists “Untitled Spider-Man PS4 Project” on his resume under the heading motion capture. You can view the cached version of his resume HERE. According to his Instagram, Stephen was also visiting Sony studios thirty nine weeks ago where he was getting a 3-D face scan. More as it develops.
