If the cancellation of Disney Infinity was opening a wound; This latest news is throwing salt on it.
Kotaku’s Patrick Klepek dug deep into what exactly led to the closure of Disney Infinity and uncovered a lot of ambitious plans for the game that unfortunately we’ll now never get to see. Had Disney Infinity continued, this fall we would have seen play sets based on the Star Wars spin-off film, Rogue One, as well as another based on the upcoming Disney produced animated feature, Mamoa. The big news for the end of the year, and I do mean BIG, is that 12-inch variants of some of the most popular Infinity figures, like Hulk and Hulkbuster, would have been sold at a premium price of $45. These figures would allegedly have more detail than the regular 4-inch figures, lit up, and acted differently in game. “They looked f—i-ng cool” was how an anoymous source who worked on the figures described the set.
Beyond 2016 and into next year, plans were underway to release a Disney Infinity 4.0 which for the first time in the franchise history, would have had a story mode that allowed the Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel brands to talk to one another for the first time. Next year’s Marvel films, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 and Thor: Ragnarok were also planned to be included in the project.
You can read Patrick’s full story at the link below which includes among other things, a story about a million unsold Hulk figures and how pressure to include Yondu in Disney Infinity 2.0 made it such that they couldn’t give the figure away. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go in the corner and die a little inside.
