In early 2015 before the release of Mortal Kombat X, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane made it known that he was in contact with WB Games to get the Spawn character a guest spot in that game but clearly that didn’t materalize. According to a recent poll put out today by Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon, it looks like he was possibly looking to get the 90’s icon into another Netherrealm fighting game along with perhaps another surprise candidate: the upcoming Injustice 2. Boon tweeted two polls, the first was to gauge the interest of four potential Mortal Kombat guest stars in Injustice 2, continuing the trend from the first game where Scorpion was added to the game via downloadable content:
The second poll that Boon made available to the public was a little bit more interesting. Alongside two pop culture characters Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Terminator, again continuing a trend from Netherrealm where characters like Jason and Freddy appeared in the two recent Mortal Kombat reboots, were two comic book characters from outside of the DC Universe: Spawn and Hellboy:
Neither Spawn nor Hellboy have been in a video game in quite some time: Spawn was last seen in 2003’s Spawn Armageddon while Hellboy was in the medicore Hellboy: The Science of Evil and seeing either or both of them show up in an Injustice sequel would be pretty interesting because it could perhaps be the baby baby steps of getting another comic publisher, Marvel, to get the ball rolling on a DC V. Marvel game. As of this writing, Spawn has the majority of the votes at 45% with Hellboy trailing at 24%.
