AVALANCHE SOFTWARE IS NO MORE, LONG LIVE AVALANCHE SOFTWARE!

It’s not very often in an industry as harsh as the video game one can be where you get to report stories about people actually getting jobs instead of losing them.

Avalanche Software, the studio that was the mastermind behind the toys-to-life game Disney Infinity which sadly ended last year, has been brought back to life under new management: that of WB Games. Over 100 people who previously worked at Avalanche before their closure have once again been reemployed and back under the leadership of the previous CEO, John Blackburn. The first project of the newly reestablished Avalanche is ironically that of a game based on a Disney property, the upcoming Pixar sequel Cars 3 which is actually being crafted using the same Octane engine that powered Disney Infinity. Though I’m not the biggest Cars person in the world, whether the actual vehicles or the Pixar property, if the project handles like the Toy Box Speedway did in Disney Infinity it could possibly be worth checking out even if you’re not a fan.

While people may hold hope against hope that because Avalanche is back this means that Infinity could come back from the dead, I wouldn’t exactly start holding your breath. WB Games has their own toys-to-life game on the market, Lego Dimensions, so I don’t think they would want to resurrect a product that at one time was their competitor. Given their experience with Disney brands, it would be interesting to see if Avalanche could perhaps lend their expertise in bringing characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars into Dimensions however. Though it wouldn’t exactly be new content, I’ve always envisioned Disney releasing collections of all the Infinity play sets that didn’t require the use of the portal and figures so those that could were curious about what Infinity had to offer could give it a try. Marvel Battlegrounds alone could make for a terrific stand along game, as would the Inside Out and Finding Dory expansions.
