Superman hasn’t had the greatest track record in the video game world, never quite being able to escape the long shadow cast by the 1999 release of Superman, or Superman 64, one of the worst reviewed games in history. For having such a sordid history with the interactive medium, it hasn’t stopped the Man of Steel from claiming the Guinness Book of World Records award for longest running video game protagonist. Before Mario, even Namco’s Pac-Man, Superman has been featured in video games going all the way back to 1978’s release of Superman on the Atari, an early movie tie-in game released first Richard Donner film. Though he hasn’t starred in a video game, at least on traditional consoles anyway, since 2006, Superman has made guest appearances in games like Lego Batman 2 & 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us and last week’s Injustice 2. It’s because of Injustice 2 that Superman was given the prestigious award by Guinness as it now means he has appeared in video games for over 38 years and 62 days. Hopefully this means that WB Games will get to work, if they haven’t already, in giving us a Superman game worthy of such a distinction.
