Spider-Man, to put it mildly, has gotten a lot of good publicity as of late. This week the character had a huge E3 when the Insomniac developed Marvel’s Spider-Man closed out the Sony press conference with a close to ten minute long gameplay demo that has received nothing but positive admiration from the enthusiast media and gaming press. There’s also a sixth live-action Spider-Man film set to hit theaters in a few short weeks (I’ve got my ticket already), Spider-Man: Homecoming, that will be the characters first film in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe after his debut as part of an ensemble in last year’s Captain America: Civil War. 

Both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Homecoming are exciting new chapters in the heroes long history. As already mentioned, Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the first time Spider-Man shares the screen with another hero from the Marvel Universe in a movie, and Marvel’s Spider-Man is a bold new direction in Spider-Man’s video game career as it’s a tent pole, first-party game published by Sony and developed by the renowned Insomniac Games. The last time a Spider-Man game was published by a first party, Sega was still manufacturing hardware. Spider-Man hasn’t headlined his own console game since 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and we haven’t played a non-movie console game featuring the character since 2011’s Spider-Man: Edge of Time. 

Spider-Man: Homecoming will also mark the first time there hasn’t been a tie-in console game launched to coincide with a Spider-Man feature film, a tradition going all the way back to 2002 when the first film directed by Sam Raimi released. To close out this chapter of Spider-Man’s video game history and leading up to Spider-Man: Homecoming, there will be a review of every Spider-Man movie game (almost) that I have yet to review for this site everyday starting June 23rd. All of the games in question that will have reviews are those found on the major consoles and handhelds, so sadly no Spider-Man 2 on N-Gage or mobile games. I also will not have a review for the notorious PC port of Spider-Man 2 as the game is rather pricey and I’m not that savvy when it comes to PC gaming. This is something that I’ve been working on since early this year, February in fact, and have been playing, finishing and banking reviews of eighteen unique Spider-man movie games for this event. Reviews will conclude on July 4th, and for the remaining three days, I’ll have features about Spider-Man 2’s importance as a sequel, a look at the Vulture’s video game career as he will make his feature film debut in Homecoming and finally on the day that Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives in North American cinemas, I’ll countdown the worst and best Spider-Man movie games.
