DISNEY TERMINATES ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH GAZILLION, KILLING MARVEL HEROES

Marvel Heroes, the free-to-play MMO from developer Gazillion Entertainment is no more as Marvel owner Disney has effectively cut ties with the company. A representative from Marvel had this to say about the termination of Marvel Heroes:

“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”

Released in 2013 for PC, Marvel Heroes has had its ups and downs in 2017. The game had finally arrived on both the PS4 and Xbox One consoles in its rebranded Marvel Heroes Omega form but shortly after launch, all of the content related to the Fantastic Four, a contentious property of Marvel’s, was pulled from the game. It was telling that something was afoot with the game when promotions from Marvel Games came out around the time Thor: Ragnarok was released with no mention of Marvel Heroes whatsoever. Fans also noticed a missed Halloween event, a month’s worth of silence on updates the disappearance of the game’s community managers.

Speaking with Kotaku, those who were with Gazillion and some who had left spoke of several rounds of layoffs a little over a year after the game’s launch and how some employees were instructed not to come into work this week. Another who was working on new content for the game advised Kotaku that they were not confident what they were working on would be implemented into the game.

I express my condolences to all those affected by the game’s cancellation and hope that they land on their feet in this already stressful time of year.
