Insomniac Games is hoarding some mystical secret within their studios as they’ve managed to release big-budget, AAA games with a consistency unheard of lately. They already have Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart under their belt on the PlayStation 5, not to mention a full remaster of 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man on top of those.
What players have been hungry for though is news on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, first shown off via a brief teaser during a PlayStation Showcase in the fall of 2021. Moments ago, during another Showcase, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 concluded the broadcast with footage that looked so far along that one could believe the game could release tomorrow.
The trailer opens up with what could almost be mistaken for a Turok reboot until Kraven the Hunter emerges from the shadows, ending the life of someone who thought they could best the mighty predator. One of his subordinates then hands him a tablet and suggests a different type of hunt, one in the concrete jungle of New York City with images of characters seen in other games like Black Cat and Prowler.
It then cuts to months later and we get our first glimpse of Spider-Man, fully encased in the Black Suit which looks oily and organic with Peter sounding far angrier than the joker we’ve come to know from Insomniac’s 2 other outings. He bursts out from a basement entrance from a house in Queens, using tentacle attacks not unlike Spider-Man: Web of Shadows against Kraven’s minions. Spider-Man mentions that they’re looking for Dr. Curt Connors, who fans will recognize as The Lizard, but he can’t get to him in time. A prompt comes on screen to switch to Miles who’s in the city and much closer.
Miles maneuvers around the city in a way that will be familiar to many, however a new tool, underarm web-gliders, gives both Miles and Peter a new way to traverse between buildings. Ganke, who can now follow Miles via a Vulture like drone, enters a hideout with Miles who shows off a new ability to anchor webs to create tightropes similar to Batman’s line launcher from the Arkham games. After clearing out the base, Miles and Peter find themselves back outside, chasing a sub-kaiju size Lizard alongside a river with Kraven’s people also in pursuit.
The perspective switches between both Spider-Men in a thrilling chase scene that’s looks like it could be a demo that could be in player’s hands right now. Peter mentions during the chase that they need to keep Connors alive as he’s one of the only people who can help save Harry Osborn. The video concludes with a worried Miles who notices that Peter’s is not himself, showing increased aggression and being far from friendly neighbourhood.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is building upon one of the strongest foundations ever built for a sequel following both Marvel’s Spider-Man and its Miles Morales centric follow-up. In just a few minutes, Insomniac teased a combination of new gameplay mechanics and story beats that assuredly will kickstart many Easter Egg hunt YouTube videos and have countless hoping for a narrower release date than simply fall 2023.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives later this year, exclusively to the PlayStation 5.
