TMNT: THE LAST RONIN ANNOUNCEMENT MOSTLY CONFIRMS WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW

Back in March, the senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, Doug Rosen, informed Polygon that work was underway on a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game. Instead of being a colorful, arcade style action game like the beloved games from the 90s and last year’s terrific Shredder’s Revenge, this new digital outing for the Turtles would be inspired by Sony’s first party offerings and based on the 2020 story The Last Ronin. Set in a dystopian New York, the story revolves around the last surviving brother seeking vengeance against those who took his family away from them.

Rosen stopped short of saying who was making this upcoming title, but assured players that like Shredder’s Revenge, they had found the right partner. Today during a digital showcase put off by publisher THQ Nordic, they unveiled themselves as the publisher of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin and Black Forest Games, best known for a pair of Destroy All Humans! remakes, as the developer. The currently announced platforms are the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC.

Outside of a 45 second proof of concept teaser concluding with the message “in development”, the publisher, developer and platforms are about the only new information we have on The Last Ronin. It joins the likes of Wonder Woman, the Captain America/Black Panther game and any number of other licensed games revealed via a brief teaser or image that no one will see anything else of in years.

Engagement will be generated online regarding the announcement, but one has to wonder if the minor bump in the price of a companies’ stock is worth showing their hand so early. This generation is relatively young, but it’s becoming largely defined by teasers that have nothing to show for software people will eventually start to forget about. A game based on The Last Ronin sounds exciting, but like the others mentioned, it feels like the news could’ve been held off for a while longer.
