BATMAN RETURNS TO VR IN THE META QUEST 3 EXCLUSIVE BATMAN: ARKHAM SHADOW

Camouflaj, the makers of our 2020 Game of the Year and 2022 VR Game of the Year, Marvel’s Iron Man VR, have finally announced their their long awaited follow-up project and once again the talented studio is playing in the superhero world.

With their last title, Camouflaj formed a partnership with Marvel, and this time they find themselves working with the distinguished competition, DC Comics, in the latest chapter of the Arkham saga: Batman: Arkham Shadow. Little is known about the game beyond a brief 50 sec teaser that sets the mood for Arkham Shadow more than anything else. In it we follow a rat around the rainy soaked streets of Gotham City, the camera panning around as if you’re Batman himself, zipping from perch points in a classic Arkham predator sequence. The solitary rat joins an army of rodents that surrounds the Dark Knight who drops a smoke pellet and whisks away.

Foreseeing any delays, Batman: Arkham Shadow is scheduled for a late 2024 release and is an exclusive to the Meta Quest 3 VR headset. A cinematic trailer will follow in 36 days as of this writing as part of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest.

It will be interesting to see just how Batman: Arkham Shadow winds up fitting within the greater saga that started with Rocksteady Studios. At the conclusion of 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight, Bruce Wayne’s secret identity was revealed to the public. 5 years later of in-game time between that and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Batman joins the Justice League before inevitably getting corrupted by Brainiac at the start of Kill the Justice League‘s campaign. Will Batman: Arkham Shadow take place within that 5 year gap?

There’s also the matter of who exactly will be voicing Batman. The late Kevin Conroy has voiced the Arkham-verse Batman in all but 2 entries: Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. On Threads, founder and studio head at Camouflaj Ryan Payton says development started on Arkham Shadow in 2020. Kevin Conroy sadly left us in 2022, the same month Marvel’s Iron Man VR launched to the Meta Quest ecosystem, but whose to say that he didn’t record his dialogue before that. Initially, it was believed that Kevin’s last performance as Batman was Kill the Justice League, but he’ll reprise his role once more for the third part of the animated adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths that releases later this year.
