This year’s iteration of Disney Infinity 3,0 is all about Star Wars but during the D23 event in August, a new play set expansion was promised for fans of the game who would rather make there’s Marvel. Other than the title Marvel Battlegrounds and a vague 2016 release date, no information on the expansion was provided. With NYCC just around the corner, Disney Interactive has just lifted the veil on what Marvel fans can expect to play in Disney Infinity 3.0 in 2016.
Coming in March 2016 and crafted by United Front Games, those of Sleeping Dogs fame, in conjunction with series overseer Avalanche Software, Marvel Battlegrounds is described as an arcade brawler that for the first time will allow four player co-op in the previously two-player only game. The story of the play set features Loki teaming up with Ultron to create robotic, villanous versions of the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Unlike the 2.0 play sets which took place in New York, Battlegrounds will take place across three location: Brooklyn, Wakanda and a S.H.I.E.L.D lunar base.
Those who went all in on Disney Infinity 2.0 last year will be happy to know that all figures are compatible with the new 3.0 play set and will receive new skills specific to Battlegrounds. The set will come with Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron, so anyone playing to buy them separately in November may want to hold off, as well as a First Avenger Captain America with a different pose, costume and abilities. New, yet as to be revealed figures are also in the pipeline for Marvel Battlegrounds. From Disney Infinity boss John Blackburn:
“With Disney Infinity 3.0, we’ve aimed to provide a wider variety of gameplay than ever before, and the Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set represents our commitment to developing something entirely new for our players…The four-player arena style combat gameplay is a perfect way for friends and families to come together and play in head-to-head battles with some of their favorite Marvel characters.”
