Square-Enix shocked us all very early in the year when they announced a partnership with Marvel to produce a big-budget, AAA game based on the Avengers property from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and Deus Ex series developer Eidos Montreal. Little to nothing was said about what the game would actually be, and all that was shown was a brief teaser video featuring familiar imagery like part of Iron Man’s armor, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and Captain America’s shield. From IGN, who reported the news via NeoGAF, job postings for Crystal Dynamics may shed some light on what shape the title may take for what is currently known as “The Avengers Project”.
The first posting is for a lead level designer position with an emphasis on crafting “fun and unique online experiences” with an understanding of “the social implications of shared gameplay”. These are pretty common things for video games to have nowadays as nearly every game has some sort of online component and now more than ever titles are being designed with the streaming culture in mind. The next posting is in search of a Combat Designer who will “plan, prototype and build combat systems that directly apply to a 3rd person cover based action adventure game.” How this will apply to a game that will more than like feature Thor, Captain America and possibly the Hulk, heroes who like to do things up more up close and personal, is remained to be seen, though the inclusion of an Avenger like Hawkeye or even Black Widow could facilitate the need of a system like this.
