In less than a years time, Marvel’s Spider-Man has become one of the most beloved comic book games of all time. Thanks to continued support from Insomniac Games, which released two new costumes earlier this month for the game alongside the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it has kept players engaged with it long past its September 2018 release month. A critical darling at launch, Marvel’s Spider-Man has now climbed the top of the commercial charts too, topping 2011’s Batman: Arkham City as the best-selling superhero game of all time according to the NPD group.
Not only is it impressive that Marvel’s Spider-Man managed to do this within one year, but it also did so as a console exclusive. Batman: Arkham City initially released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in October 2011. Since then, there has been a Game of the Year rerelease, a modified port to the Nintendo Wii U and Batman: Return to Arkham, an upgraded compilation of Batman: Arkham Asylum and City for current generation hardware. It’s difficult to say whether or not the NPD’s data accounts for subsequent ports of Arkham City, but however you spin it, this is huge news for those who love superhero games and Spider-Man.
