Marvel’s Avengers officially releases this Friday, September 4th, or even today if you pre-ordered the deluxe edition. With the game coming to many, and in the hands of a few, a third War Table event was put off today highlighting what people can expect when they start, as well as a glimpse of what’s to come, including a new-ish character.
The stream started talking about the many currencies, vendors and ways you can interact with Marvel’s Avengers’ economy before moving into new mission types. Villain Sectors will culminate with a boss battle, featuring enemies that have yet to be revealed but will include the likes of Taskmaster and Abomination who both appeared in the beta. Within these, and other stages, players have the opportunity to find clues that will lead you to S.H.I.E.L.D vaults that house special gear and other surprises. During the beta period, you could find one such vault that allowed you to replay one of the single-player only story missions with a friend. You’ll know you’re close when you start to see a distance meter countdown on your heads-up display.
The main adversary that you’ll be fighting is A.I.M, but another faction that The Avengers will run up against are the Watch Dogs. This radical group has an unhealthy prejudice against the Inhuman species and other super-powered beings. They’re taken from the comics, but they also appeared as an antagonist on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D too.
Similar to other Games-as-a-Service titles, Marvel’s Avengers will have timed events, with some limited to a week while others will last for entire seasons. An example of a weekly event type are the Mega Hives, which act as a survival mode of sort. You select a team and make your way downwards through increasingly challenging floors. Once one Avenger is defeated, you’ll work your way through your characters until they’re all exhausted. Similarly, Secret Labs will also rotate weekly and are meant to be tackled by high level players and will culminate in a boss fight.
Operations offer expansions to the story of Marvel’s Avengers and will introduce new heroes to your roster. During the second War Table, it was revealed that Hawkeye was coming shortly after launch, and today’s revealed that the second Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, is coming too, complete with her own Operation that will bring her into the fold.
