Before Marvel’s Avengers launched in September of last year, it was leaked that Spider-Man was eventually going to be added to the game as a bonus for PlayStation users. Mere days after this information started to circulate, Sony made it official via a post on their official PlayStation blog, concluding with the statement that the web-slinger would be coming in early 2021.
It’s presently August, and Spider-Man still isn’t fighting alongside the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, nor has the public even caught a glimpse of what this iteration of the character will look like. According to Marvel’s Avengers senior designer Scott Walters, it looks like the wait won’t be that much longer as Spider-Man could finally be coming before the end of the year.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Walters stated:
“In terms of what we can say now, we’ve always scheduled and looked to bring Spider-Man out in 2021 for PlayStation owners. That is still on track, so we’ll have more announcements later on this year,“.
Though there are a lot of people – in particular PlayStation owners – who are excited about Spider-Man’s Marvel’s Avengers debut, it makes a lot of sense for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics to stay radio silent on the matter, at least for now. Marvel’s Avengers has built up a lot of goodwill lately with its changes leading into the big War for Wakanda expansion that drops this coming Tuesday. Starting the marketing train for Spider-Man would right now would be a disservice to Black Panther, who’s shaping up to be an awesome new character from what’s seen in trailers.
Unless it’s a timed exclusivity, Spider-Man will be available to those playing Marvel’s Avengers on PlayStation 4 and 5. Meanwhile, everyone can enjoy Black Panther when he makes his grand entrance next week in War for Wakanda.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now on the PlayStation and Xbox family of consoles, Google Stadia and PC.
