Last week during Gamescom, the world got its first glimpse at Marvel’s Midnight Suns from developer Firaxis Games via a cinematic trailer. The tail end of the reveal teased that the first gameplay footage for the title would be revealed on September 1st, and today we got just that.
The story of Marvel’s Midnight Suns sees Hydra resurrecting the mother of demons, Lilith, through a combination of magic and science. To combat the unholy union, the likes of the Avengers, X-Men, and Doctor Strange resurrect The Hunter, a male or female character debuting here that the player can customize as they wish.
The Hunter was peacefully slumbering at a location known as the Abbey, which will act as a hub world of sorts in Midnight Suns. There you can build relationships with the heroes of the Marvel Universe, have Blade upgrade your equipment, and pick up side-missions among other things.
Hailing from a studio mostly known for titles with an emphasis on tactics, Midnight Suns is a tactical-RPG where strategy is determined by randomly selected cards. For those intimidated by this aspect, the gameplay demonstration leaned more towards thinking on the fly than deck building. You can take three characters into missions including those from the Avengers, X-Men, the Runaways, and others with a more supernatural bend like Ghost Rider. Maps include the streets of New York, Avengers Tower, and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum.
Through the official social media account for the game, it has been clarified that loot boxes or microtransactions that offer gameplay bonuses will be non-existent, however, cosmetic character skins will be available for purchase.
You can watch the extended gameplay trailer below, and pick up Marvel’s Midnight Suns on March 22nd, 2022 for the PlayStation and Xbox family of consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.
