Before E3 this summer, it was leaked that two Marvel games were set to be announced: Guardians of the Galaxy, which made its debut at the event, and a yet to be named tactics RPG from XCOM developer Firaxis and publisher 2K Games which was absent. As part of this year’s Gamescom, the Opening Night Live event hosted by Geoff Keighley pulled back the shade to shed some light on Firaxis’s upcoming game: Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
The reveal for Midnight Suns was devoid of gameplay – a first look at it will come on September 1st and the footage was captured in engine – existing more to set the tone for the game. Though you catch glimpses of mainstream characters like Captain’s America and Marvel, Wolverine and Iron Man, Midnight Suns will spotlight more mystical and supernatural characters like Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Doctor Strange, Blade, and Magik. The Avenger characters who make themselves known even appear to get a magical makeover by the time the trailer, set to a cover of “Enter Sandman” by Alessia Cara and The Warning, ends.
The main threat of Midnight Suns is Lilith, and to combat them, the likes of Doctor Strange have resurrected The Hunter, a new character created specifically for this game that the player will control and use to guide the above mentioned characters. They’re also fully customizable and have a relationship to Lilith, calling her “mother” towards the end of the trailer.
Like Firaxis’ previous games, Midnight Suns is a tactics game with RPG elements, but they’re also promising a relationship building aspect. While this has yet to be fully explained, presumably you’ll be able to strengthen the bond between The Hunter and the familiar faces from the Marvel Universe.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns arrives March 2022 for the PlayStation and Xbox family of consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.
