Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the tactical-RPG from Firaxis Games and publisher 2K was officially unveiled to the world almost a year ago during Gamescom. Though its debut was met with a stylish CG trailer that was devoid of any gameplay, a release date of March 2022 was promised and in the weeks that would follow, footage of the game in action was dropped leading up to a big Game Informer cover story blow out.
A few months later, the decision was then made to move the game into a vague second half of 2022 window with a new target launch date of October 22nd, 2022 announced during Summer Game Fest. Now, close to 2 months to its new release date, Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been pushed forward into the new year. The news came from the official Twitter account for the game:
“We have an important update to share regarding our launch date for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. After discussion with the team, we’ve made the decision to move back the launch timing of Marvel’s Midnight Suns to ensure we are delivering the best possible experience for our fans.”
Though its disappointing that players won’t get their hands on Marvel’s Midnight Suns this year, we can only hope it’s because all involved want to release the best possible product with as much care being given to the talented folks crafting it as possible. October and early November is looking to be a very crowded time to release a game this year, with such high profile titles as Bayonetta 3, God of War Ragnarök, and fellow comic book game, Gotham Knights, arriving around Marvel’s Midnight Suns original orbit. While it does carry the Marvel license, and has a roster that includes the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man and Captain America, a tactics game with an emphasis on cards might have a hard time competing during the crowded fall season. Despite being an eventual awards darling, that fate sadly fell on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021 after all.
What’s most interesting about the news is that the versions for the current generation of consoles and PC are slated to arrive within the fiscal year – which ends in March of 2023 – with last-gen machines and Switch ports arriving later. Gotham Knights was originally set to release on the PS4 and Xbox One before the decision was made to make it a current gen only game. It will be curious to see if Marvel’s Midnight Suns eventually has the same fate.
