Just a few months ago, the future of Marvel’s Avengers came into question after Square Enix, the game’s publisher, sold the studios responsible for its development, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, to the Embracer Group. With new owners and the inevitability of having to relicense the mega-popular intellectual property, there was a cloud uncertainty hovering over the live-service title that just refuses to quit. At least for the immediate future, Marvel’s Avengers appears to still be going strong as a new character will be added to the game very shortly along with some new content that will come as part of some upcoming patches.

Captain America’s life long best friend, Bucky Barnes, AKA the Winter Soldier, will come in the 2.7 update expected to arrive before the end of the year. The 2.6 update, which will drop sometime in September, will provide the context for their arrival in the villain-focused Warzone mission titled “No Rest for the Wicked”. In it, The Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini will attempt to resuscitate M.O.D.O.K, last seen falling into the San Francisco Bay upon suffering defeat at the hands of the Avengers at the climax of the game’s Reassemble campaign. This comes after many failures that have caused Monica’s grip over A.I.M to slip drastically and exhausted her resources, among them troublesome clones of Taskmaster and Abomination. Alongside this new mission, tweaks will be made to the existing roster of characters which will continue as the game continues to evolve.

Following the many negative headlines that have plagued Marvel’s Avengers since its release almost 2 years ago in 2020, it’s genuinely surprising, but in a good way, that it’s getting to continue. Helping matters greatly is the fact on both the PlayStation and Xbox ecosystem, it’s included in both of their subscription services, removing just about every barrier of entry for new players to hop in and experience it however they want to. It will be interesting to see just exactly what the conversation will be surrounding Marvel’s Avengers going into 2023 and beyond.
